Calligraphy Tuition

All Levels of Ability Welcome

I run regular calligraphy classes on a Wednesday afternoon from
1.30 - 3.30 pm.
I also run workshops.

These are either based in St.Johns Church Hall or the Cavern (next door building)
Parking is available.
Please contact me for details.

I tend to run classes in six week blocks.
Each term we practice a different script
that we then use in some sort of creative project.

Price is £15 per session.
Please check each term as this price may change.

I also teach one to one and charge £30 for one person,
£25 if there are two people together.

Calligraphy Alphabets

Creative Words

These are some suggestions for some starting out materials.

For most scripts I use a William Mitchell Dip pen nib which fits on to a pen holder. I suggest starting with a number 2 and number 3 nib. With this you will need a small reservoir bought separately to attach to the nib. I will help with attaching this.

You can buy Brause nibs or Speedball nibs which have the reservoire already attached.

Ink or gouache. I like Roberson and Co Prouts Brown as a good starting point. Gouache is an opaque watercolour paint which can be diluted to have the consistancy of ink. It comes in many colours.

Layout practice paper - this is very thin so you can see guidelines underneath.

Ruler - preferable a T squared ruler.

Pencil - preferable a mechanical one.

Copperplate and Pointed Pen Uncial require a pointed nib. I like the Leonardt Principle.
